Installing Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2012

Since I have been playing with Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2012 in my lab I thought Id throw a post on how to install DPM. It is generally an easy implementation and once installed you can start to get clever on how you backup your data.

I will be install DPM on its own deciated Server with a backend SQL Instance

Details of Deployment
Log on to my SQL Server using its Service Account (svc.sql) with Domain Admin rights
Log on to my DPM Server using its Service Account (svc.dpm) with Domain Admin rights

The Process
This is a step you would think to do 1st but is a requirement before installing DPM

  • Insert Installation Media into your SQL Server
  • Run Setup.exe from the Media if it doesnt autorun
  • You will now be presented with the below window

DPM

  • Click DPM Remote SQL Prep
  • Tick ” I Accept Licence Terms and Conditions
  • Press “OK
  • You will now be presented with the below window

DPM 1

  • Press “Next
  • Tick ” I have read and accept Licence Terms
  • Press “Install
  • Once installation has completed Press “Finish
  • You will now be presented with the below window

DPM 2

This completes the installation on the SQL Server. You will now need to connect to the your DPM Server and run the following steps

  • Insert Installation Media into your DPM Server
  • Run Setup.exe from the Media if it doesnt autorun
  • You will now be presented with the below window

DPM

  • Click Data Protection Manager
  • Tick ” I Accept Licence Terms and Conditions
  • Press “OK
  • Press “Next

You will now be presented with two options “Use the dedicated instance of SQL Server” or “Use an Existing Instance of SQL Server

For this blog I will be using “Use an existinig install of SQL Server

DPM 3

  • Enter the Server Name or Server Name\Instance Name
  • Enter User Name that has Rights to the Instance
  • Enter Password
  • Enter Domain
  • Click “Check and Install

You maybe prompted with this error if you have run the Setup before. You will need to reboot the DPM Server and re-run the above steps.

DPM 4

Once you have successfully past the prequiestes stage Press “Next

Now Enter

  • User Name
  • Company
  • Product Key
  • Press “Next

You will be asked where to put the Program Files for DPM, specify the location if you want to change the Default. Press “Next” to continue

You will now be prompted for a Password for the SQL Server and SQL Agent Service. This step doesnt create a Service Account if using a Remote Instance of SQL Server.

DPM 5

Press “Next” to continue
Opt-in or Out for Microsoft Windows Updates and Press “Next
Opt-in or Out for Microsoft Customer Experience Survey and Press “Next
Press “Install

DPM 6

Once finished, Press “Close
You have now successfully installed Microsoft Data Protection Manager. I will try get another post up on “Configuring Microsoft Data Protection Manager” soon
